Charles lived in Mapleton, Maine at the time of his enlistment on August 15, 1863. He was 25 years old and enlisted into Company C, Maine 16th Infantry Regiment on August 15, 1863. "American Civil War Soldiers" says that Charles received a disability discharge from Company C on January 11, 1864.
In the 1850 census, Charles was 11 years old and was living at home with his parents, Moses (60) and Theora (52), and siblings George (23), Moses (13), and Theasia (17).
In 1880 the census, he was 43. Along with his wife Mary A. (42) he lived in Westfield, Maine. Children in the mome were Fred W. (17) and Charles L. (15).
In 1910, Charles and Mary were living with their son E. Lincoln Allen and daughter in law Mary E. Allen.
