A partially burned Scott County, Kentucky, deed, written about 1819, named John Haun and his brothers, Adam and Henry, as heirs of Peter Haun, deceased. Peter isn't found in Scott County tax lists, and it's not clear if he was his father or brother. Two of John's grandchildren recorded his birth location as the Netherlands, but 1880 censuses for his children and his brothers' children say they were born in Maryland. John married Catherine Winter about 1808 and was the father of nine children. He owned a mill outside of Georgetown.

Local 1833 newspapers showed large numbers of deaths from cholera, although John's cause of death has not been confirmed.
