Son of George Hugh/Hughes Crawley and Elizabeth Greene.

Husband of Lucinda Lee.

William enlisted in the 45th Alabama Infantry Regiment as a Private in 1864. During the probable time frame of William's participation in the the 45th, they participated in the difficult campaigns from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, was with Hood in Tennessee, and ended the war in North Carolina. The regiment lost 27 killed, 72 wounded, and 32 missing at the Battle of Atlanta and was almost annihilated at Franklin, Tennessee. Only a remnant of the regiment surrendered on April 26, 1865.
Family tradition is that William and a friend from his regiment, were walking home after the war had ended. They had not eaten for several days and came upon a woman and asked her for food. She gave them a buttermilk pie which is like a custard pie. The men were so hungry they ate the pie too fast and William soon developed stomach cramps. His friend carried William on his back for awhile but William eventually died. He was presumably buried somewhere along the trail back to Alabama.
