Oceanna Catherine Hayzlett was born in Hancock Indiana 1840 her father was Andrew Hayzlett her mother Elizabeth Hughart Hayzlett.

Oseanna "Osea" name was Catherine but finding many Catherine's in the area she lived at. Her name was changed to Osea after a grandmother who was born on a ship while coming to the Americas. "Story by Hawn family members."

She was not only the youngest child, but the only daughter born to Andrew & Elizabeth. She had five older brothers. Many of her siblings are found in the rich history of Iowa. "Story and history by Sara Patten"

Her brother George W hayzlett married Melissa Waln. Melissa father Elijah Waln was one of the founders of Cornell College. "Story Sara Patten"

The Hayzlett are buried one row away & in front of Elijah Waln family, showing the connection between the two families; not only by marriage but by them being friends. "Pictures by myself"

Osea was also the first coed at Cornell college and is named as such in the 150 yr. history of Cornell college... she was 13 yrs old when she went. Back in those days anything after the 8th grade was considered higher education... her families connections with Elijah Waln must be the main reason she got into the school. Osea was a good match for Charles Andrew Hawn and she was very outgoing well-liked and respected. She helped her husband and taught the youth who responded to her well. "Obit found and shared by Sarah Patten"

She had Bright's disease and when she went to her daughters in ill. She finally lost the battle to her disease.

One family story speaks well of her personality and her dedication to her faith in Jesus Christ. She had been in a coma for a week and her family was around her. The md who was taking care of her. Said to the family that he had heard dandelion wine helped people with kidney problems. He told the family he felt it would help her. Much to everyone's surprise she sat up in bed and said I have never taken a drop of liquor my whole life and I will not go to my maker with it on my breath now. She laid back down and died. From pictures of her you can tell she was a beauty. Most of her life, she suffered from Bright's disease. And was ill often. But it did not stop her from living her life to the fullest."Sara Patten"
