Robert Joseph Wallen, 81, Defiance, was called home to his Father on Jan. 2, 2005, in his home.

He was born June 24, 1923, in Fort Jennings, Ohio, the son of Philomena (Heidenescher) Wallen and August Wallen. In 1949, he married Delta (May-Goodwin).

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, having served on the USS Liberty Minesweeper. He served as a gunner and baker in the Mediterranean. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was a life member of VFW Post 3360, Moose Lodge 1038, AMVETS Post 1991 and Eagles of Defiance. He worked and retired from Chief Supermarket of Defiance and Defiance Recreation Bowling Alley. He was also remembered in The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio... by Terry Ryan.

He is survived by his dearest friend, Coletta Sheets, Defiance; two daughters and four sons. They are Dan Wallen, Deb (Wallen) Salyers, Mike Wallen and Rita Wallen of Defiance; John Wallen, Hicksville, Robert Wallen Jr., South Carolina, 13 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren and a dog, Sammy. Also surviving are a brother, Norman Wallen, Southgate, Mich., four sisters, Rita Rigg, Alpena, Mich., Pauline Weaner, Bryan, Dickie Mack, Defiance, and Toni Hall, Laramie, Wyo.

His wife, Delta (May-Goodwin) Wallen, two brothers Sylvester Wallen and Irvin Wallen and one great-grandchild were also called home to their heavenly Father.

Services are to be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father Tim Kummerer. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today in the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home. A vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home. Burial will follow church services at Riverside Cemetery, Defiance, where VFW Post 3360 will conduct military rites.

Preferred memorials are to Hospice the Caring Way of Defiance or a charity of the donors choice. (Paid obituary)

Services for Robert J. Wallen Sr. were held Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Tim Kummerer officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery with military rites accorded by VFW Post 3360. Music was by Francisco Lloveras. Pallbearers were Mike Gineman, Marc and Daniel Wallen, Brice Rios, Lynn Frederick and Rick Kiessling. Honorary pallbearer was Michael Gineman. Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home handled arrangements.
