Frances H. Gibson, 97, of Hamlet, NC died Saturday, September 15th at Scotia Village, Laurinburg, NC. Mrs. Gibson was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Nathan Norman Gibson. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Evans Cleveland Hunsucker and Mrs. Vertie Cline Hunsucker; her oldest son, Norman Thomas Gibson; and a granddaughter, Martha Stewart Gibson.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 21, from 4-6 pm at Harrington Funeral Home and Crematory, Hamlet, NC. Memorial Services will be held at 11 am on Saturday, September 22, at Scotia Village in Laurinburg with Rev. Neal Carter and Rev. Elizabeth Forester presiding. Graveside services will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, September 22, at Richmond Memorial Park, Rockingham, NC with Rev. Edgar Grooms and Rev. Ken Buckingham officiating.
Mrs. Gibson was born in Charlotte, NC and grew up both in Charlotte and Conover, NC. She was a 1936 graduate of Queens College, Charlotte, NC with a double major in Chemistry and Biology; was a registered medical technologist prior to marrying Nathan; was a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists; and college librarian. Mrs. Gibson was listed in Marquis' Who's Who of American Women and listed in Personalities of the South.
Mrs. Gibson was a member of the Hamlet First United Methodist Church for 72 years where she was a Sunday School teacher for 25 years and served as MYF counselor and a member of the Building Committee. Also, in Hamlet she was a member of the Athenian Book Club, DAR and an active member of the Parent Teachers Association for 25 years. She was awarded first place in acrylics painting by the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs, Inc. and received the Family History Book Award presented by the North Carolina Society of Historians in 1989 for her book entitled Genealogy of the Marcus Lafayette Cline Family.
In 1992, Frances and Nathan retired to Laurinburg. Mrs. Gibson was a member of The Scotia Village Rhythmaires and the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church. After her husband died in 1996, she served as a Director on the Board of Swink-Quality Oil Company.
Mrs. Gibson dedicated her life to God and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt. She enjoyed reading, painting, the theater, traveling and being with her family and friends. No words can convey the extent of a life so well lived.
