MEEKS, W. HOWARD
Oak Ridger since 1943. Walter Howard Meeks, 61, 302 E. Faunce Road, an Oak Ridger since 1943, died at 5:05 a.m. Sunday in Oak Ridge Hospital. He was a victim of cancer. Mr. Meeks came to Oak Ridge directly from service in the U.S. Navy during World War II to work as a chemical operator in Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant. He was later employed at a service station until going to work for Modern Recapping and Tire Sales six years ago. On May 2 of this year, he was given a medical leave of absence. Mr. Meeks grew up in Raymer, TN, and Corinth, MS. He was an outdoorsman, a fisherman, and hunter, and he also liked to garden. He raised fruit trees at his home on Waddell Place here, where he resided for almost 19 years. An animal lover, he learned to coax wild animals such as squirrels from nearby woods into his home. Mr. Meeks was a member of Central Baptist Church. He was married to the former Ruth Clenney, who survives him. They became the parents of five children: Bill Meeks, a draftsman engineer of Annandale, VA; Bob Meeks, a construction engineer who lives in the same town; Mrs. W. C. (Linda) Gunter, Sevierville; Richard Meeks, a graduate student at the University of Tennessee who was once a track star at Oak Ridge High School; and Joe Meeks of Knoxville. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Martin Funeral Home here. The Rev. Jack Crass, pastor of Kellytown Baptist Church, Oliver Springs, and the Rev. James Ross, pastor, of United Pentacostal Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Gardens. The pallbearers will be employees of Modern Recapping and Tire Sales. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Martin's.
