U.S. Congressman. He attended Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College, the North Texas State University, graduated from the University of Texas and was successful rancher in Collin County, Texas. Entering politics, he was on the staff for Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn of Texas, Washington, D.C. (1941-42). During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy (1942-45) and also saw active duty in the Korean War, while serving in the U.S. Naval Reserve. After the war, he was a member of the Texas State Senate (1955-62) and was a president pro tempore, 1961. In 1962, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of U.S. Representative Sam Rayburn and reelected to the nine succeeding Congresses, serving until 1981. Not a candidate for reelection, he was a businessman and rancher until his death. Lake Ray Roberts in Denton, Texas, is named in his honor.
