She was baptized as an infant by her father at the Mt. Vernon African Methodist Episcopal Church in Palestine, Texas Throughout her life she continued to be closely identified with religious work.
She attended the public schools of Palestine, Corpus Christi, and San Antonio, graduating in 1958 with honors from Wheatly High School in San Antonio. By 1960, she had graduated, with highest honors, from St. Phillips College.
On June 1, 1962 Tommie Lavern Steadham was united in hold matrimony to Carl Douglas Woodard. She is the mother of Thomas Edgar Woodard.
At the time of her demise, TOMMIE LAVERN STEADHAM WOODARD was a member of Grant Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church and a choir member. Professionally, she was chief bookkeeper in the business office at St. Phillips College. Civically, she was an instructor of shorthand and typewriting at the Pine Street YWCA.
