Valera Evelyn "Evy" (Smith) Hodges passed away Thursday, December 18, 2008 at the Oakland Manor in Oakland, Iowa.
Valera Evelyn Hodges, one of two daughters of Bertha Lorena (Pilcher) and Jessie Clyde Smith, was born on June 11, 1915 in Hobarton, Iowa. Fondly known as "Evy", she grew up in Algona, Iowa and graduated from Algona High School in 1934. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and graduated in 1938. Evy came to Carson, Iowa where she taught music in the public school for three years.
Evy married Wayne Lloyd Hodges on June 7, 1941 at the Carson Presbyterian Church. They made their home in Carson. In 1942-1945, during World War II, Wayne served with the United States Navy Sea Bee's. Following the service, Wayne returned home and was a self-employed masonry contractor. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Orien Wayne and Charles Lloyd. After the boys were grown, Evy returned to the Carson school to teach music for one year and six more years in Macedonia.
Evy and Wayne were both community supporters. Evy was active in the Carson Presbyterian Church and United Presbyterian Women, the American Legion Auxiliary, Botna Valley Genealogical Society, Friday Bridge Club, and the Republican Women. She was best known for her dedication in playing the organ at church and teaching piano out of her home to countless children of the area. At the tender age of 80, Evy shared her love of music by playing the piano for the enjoyment of the "old folks" at the Avoca and Oakland nursing homes and Oakland Senior Center. She enjoyed doing handwork, making crafts and especially cherished her time with her family.
Evy and Wayne had celebrated 57 years of marriage when Wayne passed away in August of 1998. Evy continued to live in Carson and be active in the community. On March 18, 2008, she moved to the Oakland Manor where she quietly passed away with her family and pastor by her side, on December 18, 2008. She had attained the age of 93 years, 6 months and 7 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie Smith and Bertha Smith Roberts; stepfather Donald Roberts; her husband Wayne Hodges; and her only sister Lorena Louise Smith.
Evy is survived by her sons, Orien Hodges and wife Jan of Oakland, IA, and Charles Hodges and his wife Penny of Waldorf, MD; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
