Backhaus, Joseph N. (Nov. 19, 1903-Feb. 26, 1973 –husband to Florentine Schuler [married Sept. 14, 1926 at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton] –son of Nicholas Backhaus and Katharine Schwoerer –born Town of Liberty –on Sept. 28, 1928 purchased the Benjamin Pritzel Essex and Maxwell auto dealership at 205 South Fourth Avenue in St. Nazianz –this then became a Chrysler-Plymouth dealership –in 1944 also got into the school bus business –on Feb. 1, 1945 a fire destroyed the garage and adjacent living quarters –the garage was replaced later that same year –ran this dealership until his death in 1973 –ownership was then given to his two children who were Agnes Neumeyer and Roman Backhaus –on Nov. 1, 1950 built a house on a lot just south of his in-laws (Gottfried and Agnes Schuler) at 102 South Fourth Avenue in St. Nazianz –after the death of his mother-in-law Agnes Schuler in 1963, this house to the north side of the lot was razed –Joseph lived in this newer house at 102 South Fourth Avenue in St. Nazianz until his death in 1973 –Florence continued to live here until shortly before her death in 2000 –this house was then sold to Florence’s son-in-law Edward Neumeyer –died from “pulmonary congestion, myocardial infarction”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 5, Row 5, Lot 11] [marriage record Manitowoc 20-301] [death record Manitowoc 72-447]

Joseph Backhaus, 69, of St. Nazianz, died Monday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc.
Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at Christianson Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. The Rev. Cyril Dickrell will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Mr. Backhaus was born Nov. 19, 1903, at St. Nazianz, son of the late Nick and Catherine Schwoerer Backhaus. He married Florentine Schuler Sept. 14, 1926, at St. Nazianz. He operated the Chrysler Plymouth Garage at St. Nazianz for about 50 years. He had been very active in St. Nazianz village civic affairs.

Survivors are his widow; a son, Roman, a daughter, Mrs. Ed (Agnes) Neumeyer; a brother, Ed, and a half-brother, Henry, all of St. Nazianz; a sister, Mrs. Rose Wesling, and a half-sister, Mrs. Ann Frewert, both of Plymouth; a half-sister, Mrs. Betty Brooks of Forest Junction and four grandchildren.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Wednesday where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.
