LYND WARD, ARTIST AND ILLUSTRATOR:- Sunday, July 7, 1985

Lynd Ward, one of America's leading artists and book illustrators, died June 28. The Reston, Va., resident was 80.

Mr. Ward, a former resident of Englewood, Leonia, Fort Lee, and Cresskill, illustrated books for children and adults for over 50 years.

He was a resident of Reston for six years.

Mr. Ward was known as an author and printmaker, as well as a free-lance artist. A 1926 graduate of Columbia University, he continued his studies at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig, Germany.

While in Germany, he came across a small book whose story was told in woodcuts by Belgian artist Frans Masereel. Although the idea of telling stories without words was not a new departure, Mr. Ward revived the art form.

In 1929, his first book was published, "God's Man," a novel in woodcuts, the first of its type produced in the United States.

Robin Ward Savage, graphic designer and the artist's daughter, said that his woodcuts are admired today by many musicians in the Los Angeles area. They include Graham Nash, who collects Mr. Ward's prints, and Mick Jagger, who used a woodcut from "God's Man" for the inner sleeve of Jagger's recent album "She's the Boss. "

Mr. Ward and his wife, author May McNeer, produced children's books their first joint project, also published in 1929, was a Japanese folk tale, "Prince Bantam. " Many of the books that Mr. Ward illustrated had been written by his wife.

Mr. Ward was a former member of the Leonia Players Guild and The Whetstone Discussion Group of Leonia.

Surviving are his wife, May McNeer Ward; two daughters, Nanda Ward of Reston, and Robin Savage in Pennsylvania, and four grandchildren.

Arrangements were made by the Ives Pearson Funeral Home, Falls Church, Va.
