John Augustus immigrated to Philadelphia via Rotterdam on August 24, 1753. He was indentured for five years; ended indenturedness on November 20, 1758, White Marsh Twp., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John Garrett held indenture papers. Later made his way to New Castle Co., Delaware. Served as an elder in the Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church.

He served in the military in the Revolutionary War (SAR 58151).

Son of Frederick Ludwig or Lewis Augustus and Augusta Walmoden of Hanover, Germany.

John's father-in-law, John Springer, was blind. When John Augustus planned to move west with his family about 1770, his father-in-law convinced him to stay in Delaware, promising him his estate in exchange for care for him, his wife, and his unmarried (and blind) children, William, Mary & Rebecca.
