Jacob was the son of Philip Burroughs and his wife, Keziah Hendrickson Burroughs.

He married Charity Drake on Nov. 28, 1811 in Flemington, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey. They had seven children: George W. about 1813 (died about 1833), Mary Ann about 1815, Catherine Eliza about 1820, Kezia in 1822, John G. about 1826 and twins Louisa and Sarah in 1829.

His second wife was Lydia Pearson.

James was a farmer. He lived in Hopewell Twp., Mercer Co., New Jersey.

He was listed as a slave owner in the 1840 census.
