Thomas Westnedge Dies This Morning after Illness of May Weeks
Came to County in 1868
Born in England But served With Northern Army During Civil War—Many Relatives and Friends Survive.
Thomas Westnedge, aged 81, father of Lieut. Col. Joseph B. Westnedge, and Mrs. Claude S. Carney of this city, and Mrs. M. P. Carney of Battle Creek, one of Kalamazoo's best known residents died this morning at 9 o'clock at his home, on the Portage road after being unconscious for the past few days.
Mr. Westnedge had had three strokes—the last one about a year ago, but rallied and until a short time ago had been in rather good health and able, to walk about the house. For the past month, however, he had been seriously ill, and his life was despaired of.
Mr. Westnedge was born at Sheffield, Eng., on June 14, 1834. He came to this county in 1868, and has lived here ever since. He married Miss Mary Burchnall. To them were born four children. Mrs. M. P. Carney of Battle Creek: the late Richard B. Westnedge who died in the Philippines with typhoid fever during the Spanish-American war, when serving as a surgeon in the army: Lieut. Col. Joseph B. Westnedge, the highest officer in the local Michigan National Guard and Mrs. Claude S. Carney of this city, one brother, Joseph of Whitehall, Ill., and a number of grandchildren.
During the Civil war, Thomas Westnedge served in Company E. 81st New York volunteers. He was injured in the battle of Seven Pines. He was a charter member of the Orcutt Post G. A. R. and one of the most active local veterans until his health began to fail. He has many friends in Kalamazoo and vicinity who will hear of his death with sorrow. For years he was a member of the local Episcopal church.
The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the home—the old family home, where the Westnedges have lived for many years. Interment will be in Riverside. All friends are requested not to send flowers.
Mrs. M. P. Carney, the daughter who lives in Battle Creek, was unable to be here when her father died, because her husband, M. P. Carney, well known architect, who designed the Kalamazoo armory, is in such a serious condition that he is not expected to live. He is suffering with bright's disease and interminant[sic] heart trouble. Mrs. Carney will be here for the funeral. Kalamazoo Telegraph Press December 16, 1915 page 11
