Richard W. “Dick” Tewksbury, 81, of Laconia, N.H. died Sunday, September 19, 2004 at his son’s home in Chester, N.H. of cancer.
He was born in Manchester, N.H. on April 9, 1923, a son of the late Carl and Allura (Whitney) Tewksbury.
He was a resident of Laconia for the past 25 years, formerly living in Derry. He was a graduate of Pinkerton Academy in Derry, Class of 1942. He served in the US Army during WWII throughout Europe and was on the beach at Normandy at D-Day Plus 4. He was the Commander of the American Legion Post #1 in Laconia from 2003-2004. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge #876, and the VFW Post #1670. He was also a life member of St. Marks Lodge #44 F&AM in Derry where he received his 50 year pin last year. He retired from the NE Telephone Company after 34 years where he was a COEI foreman. He was a member of the Pioneers of America. After his retirement, he went to work for the Laconia Savings Bank for 16 years as a maintenance man.
He lived life to the fullest. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and his triplet great granddaughters, Erin, Katie and Samantha Tewksbury, born in December 2003. He was famous for telling jokes and reciting poetry even during his illness. He was an avid Nascar race fan and helped sponsor a race car for Del War Racing in Lincoln, NH. He enjoyed watching Red Sox games with his son Steve.
He was predeceased by his wife Gloria Tewksbury in May 1999 and his former wife, Dorothy Tewksbury in January 2004.
Family members include one son, Steve Tewksbury of Chester, one daughter, Susan Madden of Londonderry, two stepsons, Ralph Plummer of Laconia, Tom Plummer of North Carolina, stepdaughter Carol Symond of Laconia, two grandsons, five granddaughters, seven great grandchildren, one brother, Angus MacIntyre of Auburn, N.H., several nieces and nephews.
