Son of Peter Chilgren/Kilgren and Christina Carlson. John and his first wife immigrated from Sweden about 1900, stopping for about a year in New Foundland, then continuing on to Minneapolis, Mn. From there they obtained a homestead in the Black Duck area of Beltrami county, Mn. where they farmed and raised their family until the death of first wife Brita Kristina in 1918. Following her death, John came to Wisconsin with his children and remained there until the time of his death. During his lifetime in addition to farming he worked as a foundry man, and had been involved with construction of bridges and schools.

His eldest son was Edwin J. Chilgren, Mn. legislator and advocate of education, and other important causes. Edwin lived most of his life in Mn. and is buried there along with his wife Flonice.
