Great-Grandfather

Ira Emmett Hinshaw was the son of Thomas William & Vina Arvella Counts Hinshaw. He married Nannie Helen Jacks, daughter of Benjamin Franklin & Harriet Jane Robertson Jacks, on December 29, 1918, in Franklin County, Tennessee. The couple eloped after Emmett helped Nannie sneak out of an open window in her mother's home. Emmett said his mother-in-law never liked him after that!

To this union was born nine children - Etta Epsie (Bird), Mary Jane (Long), John Lawson, Lester Donald, Opal Ernestine (Craig), Bertie Lou (Stapler), Alvin Ray, Shirley Fay (Lohenitz), and Helen Dean (Young).

After the death of his wife in 1945, Emmett made his way to Florida where he would spend the next thirty years of his life before returning to Madison County in the mid-1970's, settling near New Market, Alabama.

Ira Emmett Hinshaw died in the Medical Center Hospital (now Huntsville Women's & Children's), on January 22, 1982, and was laid to rest in the Neal's Chapel Cemetery beside of his late wife. Though he survived Nannie by thirty-seven years, Emmett never remarried.
