Jay was born in Portland, ME on February 11, 1940, a son of the late John E. and Florence (Rolston) Tolan.
Formerly living in Cumberland and Biddeford, ME., he had recently moved to Petaluma where he was soon to marry his fiance, Sharon Bojanski.
Jay grew up on Peak’s Island, ME just off the Portland coast. He was a 1958 graduate of Portland High School where he was an All Star football and baseball player and captain of both teams. He graduated in 1965 from the University of Maine. Over the years Jay was employed by General Motors, Flint, MI, General Electric, Hooksett, NH, Textron Defense Systems, Wilmington, MA and Opto Electronics in Petaluma, CA.
He dreamed of one day owning his own golf business which he accomplished by opening J’s Fore Season Golf on Forest Avenue in Portland. Jay was an avid golfer, enjoyed woodworking and sailing.
He is survived by two sons, John E. Tolan and his wife Heather of Scarboro, ME, David P. Tolan of Seattle, WA, one daughter, Jennifer A. Peabody and her husband Craig of Londonderry, NH, five grandchildren, one brother, Edward Tolan and his wife Barbara of Falmouth, ME, his fiancé, Sharon Bojanski of Petaluma, CA., also many nieces and nephews.
Burial in Calvary Cemetery, S. Portland, ME.
