Charles Reese Mitchell, 79, of Muscle Shoals, died Saturday, June 9, 2007. His funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2007, at Highland Park Church of Christ, with Mike Brooks and Dr. Tom Whatley officiating. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Mount Home Presbyterian Cemetery in Belgreen, Ala. He is survived by his wife, Betty Murray Mitchell, of Muscle Shoals; daughters, Leslie Ann Mitchell, of Arlington, Va., Carrie M. Greene and husband, Bruce, of Muscle Shoals; stepdaughters, Kim Franks, of Russellville, Shannon O'Neal and husband, Ronnie, of Russellville, Laurel Scruggs, of Muscle Shoals; granddaughter, Olivia Caroline Greene; stepgrandchildren, Judd Franks, Luke O'Neal, Libby O'Neal and Kaylie Grace Wright; and his beloved boxer, Flash. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II and the Korean War. He was former mayor of Muscle Shoals. He was a member of Highland Park Church of Christ, Rotary Club, Lions Club, the Shoals Community College Foundation and Delta Chi fraternity. He was very active in politics, where he served on city, state and national levels. He was a World War II history buff. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama and an avid Alabama athletic fan. He also graduated from The George Washington University School of Law. Pallbearers will be Bob Carter, Ed Underwood, Marcel Black, Judd Franks, Dean Lesley, Jim Holland, Ricky Williams and Wayne York. Honorary pallbearers will be the Muscle Shoals Fire Department, deacons and elders of Highland Park Church of Christ, G.R. McDonald, Charlie Carmichael, Dr. Jack McLendon, Tom Pennington and the Muscle Shoals city employees during his administration.
