Asa Otis was born in Ft. Ann, NY, to Mattson Otis (1772-1857) and Deborah Wetheral Otis (1775-1852). There is some biographical information about the Otis family in the book "Portrait and biographigal sketches and representative citizens, together with portraits and biographies of all the presidents of the United States and governors of the state Chicago", Chapman brothers, 1891 (p. 622). In it, Asa is credited with "...building a plank road from Plymouth to Detroit" and was noted to be "...a prominent politician...". In the book "Portrait and biographical album of Ionia and Montcalm Counties, Michigan", Asa is listed a being "...a member of the Michigan State Legislature in 1850, also of the Michigan State Constitutional Convention in 1835. For four years he was undersheriff at Detroit. He also for many years held the office of Supervisor and was Justice of the Peace in his township....At his death, he owned 500 acres of land near Detroit, three hundred and twenty acres at Grand Rapids, and a large tract of land in Lapeer County..."
