Gilbert was the seventh of ten children. On May 20, 1870, he was baptized by Rev. Edmund Belfour at Saint John's Evangelical Lutheran in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. On September 15, 1894, he married Lillian Reeve at Port Oram, Morris County, New Jersey. The couple raised two children: Flora and Karl Argyle. He worked as a bookkeeper for the railroad.
