His father was an aggressive businessman, who lost much of his wealth in ill-advised ventures. The Groves were staunch Anglicans, attending the gloomy old grime-stained Anglican Church at Fulham in London.
He was a dentist in Plymouth, a Missionary in India and Baghdad and author of "A Mission Call For Every Christian."
Anthony was the brother-in-law of George Muller. Anthony's sister Mary Groves Muller married George Muller. Muller said: "My brother-in-law, Mr AN Groves, of whom mention has been made, as having been helpful to me by his example when I began my labours in England in 1829, in that he, without any visible support, and without being connected with any Missionary Society, went with his wife and children to Bagdad, as a Missionary."
At age 21 Anthony married his cousin, Mary Bethia Thompson, and moved to Exeter. They had two sons:

His wife and a newborn daughter died in March 1831 in Baghdad. Anthony made this entry in his diary: "The Lord has this day manifested that the disease of my dear wife is the plague, and of a very dangerous type, so that our hearts are prostrate in the Lord's presence . . . It is indeed an awful moment, yet my dear wife's faith triumphs. The difference between a child of God and a worldling is not in death, but in the hope the one has in Jesus, while the other is without hope and without God in the world."
Anthony married a second time to Harriet Baynes on 25 April 1835 at St Mary's Church, Great Malvern.
Groves continued preaching and teaching in India until ill health forced him back to England in 1852. His niece, Lydia Müller Wright, wrote at the time "Leaning his head on his hand, he sweetly fell asleep in Jesus", at twelve on Friday, 20th May 1853 in the home of his sister's husband, George Müller.
