"UNADILLA — Charles E. Nelson, 79, of Unadilla, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 7, 2000, at his residence. He was born April 19, 1921, in West Laurens, the son of Hans K. Nelson and Anna M. Rasmussen Nelson. His first wife, the former Ruth Thayer Jones, died June 25, 1988. On May 29, 1994, Charles married the former Laura Lyon Gale, who survives him. Charles was a tool maker and machinist for the Bendix Corp., Sidney, for several years before his retirement. He had also worked as a mason and roofer, as well as having been involved with carpentry at one time. A resident of Unadilla since 1967, moving from Laurens, Charles was a graduate of Laurens Central School. In his younger years, he played baseball for the Laurens town team and also enjoyed football and basketball. He was a member of the Laurens Lutheran Church and attended services at the Otego United Methodist Church. Charles was also a member of the Sidney Moose Club. He is survived by his wife, Laura Gale Nelson, of Unadilla; seven stepsons and their wives, Robert and Linda Jones of San Diego, Calif., Anthony and Patricia Jones of Texas City, Texas, Ronald and Patricia Jones of Orlando, Fla., Gordon and Connie Gale of Goodyear Lake, Ronald and Kathryn Gale of Otego, Terry and Carol Gale of Monroe, N.C., and Thomas and Crystal Gale of Goodyear Lake; one stepdaughter and her husband, Rebecca and Gordon Brannick of Gilbertsville; and a sister, Carol Broadwell of Oneonta. He also is survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, close friends and neighbors ... Burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris ..."
