Henderson was a son of Henderson Lewis. Burrow who was born about 1849 in Kentucky may have been a son. In about 1860 Henderson married Ellen (Brooks) Downing of Franklin County, Kentucky. She was born in Kentucky about 1835.

Henderson enrolled in the Union Army from Evansville as an Unassigned Recruit on August 22, 1864. He was later assigned to Company B of the 28th U.S. Colored Infantry and mustered in on September 1, 1864. Henderson was treated for dysentery from September 13 through October 26, 1864 before being returned to active duty. He was at Camp William Penn in May 1865. Henderson mustered out on November 18, 1865 at Corpus Christi, Texas. He may have also served as a Private in Company I, 8th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery.

Children of Henderson and Ellen included Mary, Martha, Sally, Carrie, Jennie, Solomon and Burrell. In 1864 he was a Vanderburgh County, Indiana farmer. In 1870 the family lived in Morganfield Precinct, Union County. They moved to Illinois about 1874 and by 1880 lived at Shawneetown Precinct, Gallatin County. Henderson filed a pension application from Illinois on August 24, 1880. The family moved to Point Township, Posey County and then to Uniontown, Kentucky by 1886. Ellen died about then. In 1900 Henderson lived in Shawnee Township, Gallatin County. In 1910 he lived on Second Street in Mt. Vernon adjacent to daughter Sallie Lewis. Henderson died at his Second Street home on November 20, 1916. Sallie was the informant for the certificate of death. The veteran was also shown as Henderson D. Lewis and Henderson Walker, the name under which he enlisted in the military.
