"PIONEER OF ROCK FALLS TAKEN AT AGE OF 93"
Comrade Charles Allen, oldest citizen of Rock Falls and the oldest GAR veteran living in Rock Falls, passed away at the age 93 years old early Thursday morning (Dec 4, 1930) in his home on Dixon Avenue in Rock Falls.
Charles Allen was born April 7, 1837, and lived his early life in the vicinity of Polo. He enlisted in Company B, Seventh Illinois Calvary, Sept. 5, 1861 at Polo. After serving four years and three months in the northern army, he received his honorable discharge from service in 1865 at Nashville, Tenn. Mr. Allen figured in Grayson's raid from LaGrange, Tenn., to Baton Rouge, La., being a member of the detachment dismissed from the escort of General Dundler to participate in the raid.
Three years later on Dec 24, 1868, Mr. Allen was united in marriage to Miss Agnes Rae of Polo. The wedding took place at the old McNeil homestead on the Dixon road east of Rock Falls. Afterwards, they returned to Polo and made their home. A few years later they came to Coloma township and purchased a farm southeast of Rock Falls. There was not a house in Rock Falls then, the site of the city being prairie. They lived for a while on Dixon Avenue prior to building their own home at 209 Dixon ave., where they live for the past 57 years, thus making their home one of the oldest residences and landmarks in the city. They were married 61 years until Mrs. Allen passed away in July of 1930.
He is survived by two sons; William of Bridgeport, Conn. and Ray of Salt Lake City, Utah.
