He was a member of the Poquoson Art League and Trinity United Methodist Church, and his love for working the water led to his enjoyment of building model boats. Nelson was considered the "Patriarch" of the Poquoson waterman.
Nelson was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Albert Firth.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Alice Nell Firth; sons, Nelson Firth Jr. and wife, Mary, and Michael Lynn Firth and wife, Patty; daughter, Andrea Dee Forrest and husband, William; his father, Nelson E. "Doc" Firth; brother, Dwayne E. Firth and wife, Mel; sisters, Mary Sue Powell, and Esther Kay Graham and husband, Micky; grandchildren, Bobby Strickland (Jess), Thomas Strickland, Jacob Firth, Elizabeth Firth, Sydney Firth, Cody Reed, Kipton Forrest, and John Michael Forrest; great-grandchildren, Lily and Lucy; and his constant furry companion, Ellie Mae.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home and other times at his home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Poquoson, by the Rev. Charles R. Stacy and the Rev. George T. Insley Jr. Burial will follow at Weston Cemetery, Poquoson
