Robert Fred "Bob" Smith, 84, of Neodesha, Kansas, died Sunday, June 17, 2007, at the VA Hospital in Wichita, KS.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2007, in the Neodesha Cemetery under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Loran Fawcett Chapel.
Military honors will be accorded by an honor guard from Ft. Riley, KS.
The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
The son of Fred M. and Mary Christine (Hollis) Smith, he was born July 10, 1922, in Mound City, KS, where he received his education.
He joined the US Army in July of 1943 and served with the Light Artillery 95 Division in Germany and Belgium during WWII. Mr. Smith received the Purple Heart for wounds incurred during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He was honorably discharged at Camp Shelby, Mississippi in November of 1945 at the rank of T-5.
On July 2, 1968, he was united in marriage to Alice E. Brown in Miami, OK. The couple moved to Neodesha in March of 1978 and she preceded him in death in 2000.
He married Mabel Davis on January 7, 2004, in Miami, OK. She preceded him in death May 15, 2006.
Mr. Smith was a longtime employee of the City of Neodesha, retiring in 1988.
He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 5962 in Neodesha and a lifetime member of the American Legion.
Survivors include three sisters, Josephine Johnson of Mound City, KS, Anna Mae Carrel of Nevada, MO, and Betty Fyock of Prescott, KS.
