Opal Lucille (Ogles) Newcomb ~ June 12, 1916 ~ September 21, 2012

Opal Newcomb was born June 12, 1916 in Springfield, Missouri. She was the ninth and youngest child of William and Lula Mae (Whitlock) Ogles.

At age 11 the family moved 140 miles southeast to Koshkonong, Missouri, where she finished her schooling.

Opal married Rod Newcomb six days after her 18th birthday, on June 18, 1934. It was during the great depression and terrible drought. In June, 1935, the two families auctioned most of their belongings. Opal's father bought a new Ford truck and put a canvas cover over the back, like in The Grapes of Wrath movie, and drove to Oregon. There were 13 people in the truck, including her daughter, Lois, who was one month old.

During the coming years she and Rod had two more daughters, Vivian and Wanda. Two sons, Richard born in Oregon and Gary in California.

They lived in South San Francisco and Brisbane, California during WWII. In the fall of 1946, they moved back to Oregon to be near her parents and her brothers and sisters.

The family moved to a farm west of Carlton, where they lived for five years. They eventually settled in Dayton in 1952, where their children graduated from High School.

In 1957, Opal started work in Portland for Portland Furniture Company (Built-well). They moved to Newberg in 1963 so she could be closer to commuting to work. She was with them for 15 years until the plant closed in May, 1972.

After Rod retired they bought a travel trailer and spent winters in Arizona. They bought a mobile home in Apache Junction and in the fall of 1973 they sold their home in Newberg.

They visited their children and grandchildren during the summers. Rod's health was poor and while visiting their son, Gary, in Rainier, Oregon he passed away July 17, 1980. They had been married 46 years.

Opal spent one more winter in Arizona and moved back to Rainier, Oregon. In 1986 she rented an apartment in Newberg, close to her daughters, Lois and Vivian. She moved to Richland, Washington in 2005 to be near her oldest daughter, Lois.

Her sons, Gary and Richard preceded her in death. Opal is survived by her three daughters, 17 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.

A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, September 27 at 1:00 p. m in Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel on Villa Road in Newberg with burial following at Newberg Friends Cemetery.
