Death at 4 p.m. yesterday claimed William A. (Purdue) Norris, 429 West Poplar street, Shenandoah, a captain of the Capitol Police at Harrisberg. He died at Locust Mountain Hospital, where he had been a patient since April 18. Ill the last several months, he had also been a patient at Geisinger Hospital, Danville.

A son of the late Frank and Margaret (Kubilus) Norris, he was born in New Philadelphia and came to Shenandoah as a child, receiving his education in local schools. In his youth, he was active in athletics and was particularly adept on the baseball diamond, having been a standout pitcher for the champion St. George's team of the old City League. He competed with such stalwarts as Bud O'Haren, Bobby Nork and Ed Katalihas.

He entered the U. S. Army in 1933 and served a three-year tour of duty, which included service in the Hawaiian Islands. During his early working years, he obtained employment at area collieries, and worked at Maple Hill as a motorman until 1954.

On October 12, 1955, he was appointed to the Capitol Police Force by William D. Thomas, then State Secretary of Property and Supplies. Mr. Norris also was employed as a steward by Paskey's Restaurant here.

Active in community affairs, he was a member and past chaplain of the Shenandoah Elks Lodge; a member of the Shenandoah Eagles Aerie; the Fraternal Order of Police; and St. George's Church.

Surviving are his widow, the former Rose Gawrylik; three daughters: Roseann. a member of the staff at the Pottsville Employment Security Office; Catherine and Mary Ellen, at home. Further surviving are two brothers and two sisters: Edward Astrumsky, Shenandoah Heights; Frank Norris and Tessie Norris, New Philadelphia; Mrs. Alex Kruszynsky. Shenandoah.

The funeral will be Saturday morning from the Oravitz Home for Funerals, 38-40 North Jardin street, followed by Solemn Requiem Mass at 10 o'clock in St. George's Church and interment in the parish cemetery. Viewing will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday. J. A. Oravitz and Sons have charge.
