W A "Gus" Pope, 74, of the Mercer Community, died Monday evening at 10:15 in Brints Hospital in Bolivar where he had been hospitalized since the 9th of March.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 PM from the Mercer Baptist Church with Rev Billy Griffin officiating. Burial will follow in the Maple Springs Cemetery near Mercer.

Mr Pope was born and reared in Madison County, March 17, 1885, son of William Pope and Molly Britton Pope and had lived his entire life within the same vicinity. He was a retired blacksmith and farmer and was a member of Mercer Baptist Church. He served as a deacon and was a member of the Men's Adult Sunday School class.

He was married Dec 28, 1902 to the former Georgia Tate and she survives him. Other survivors include four sons, Elmer Pope of Jackson, WJ Pope of Bruceton; Thomas W and Paul Pope both of Memphis; five daughters, Mrs CC Robinson of Mercer, Mrs Richard Martindale of Memphis, Mrs Herman Smith of Dyersburg, Mrs Charles Walker of Macon, GA and Mrs Elsie Cain of Mercer; two brothers, JH Pope of Jackson and WG Gordon (half brothers), 21 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

His body will be at Smith Funeral Home until the funeral hour.

Pallbearers to serve will be the following grandsons; Cecil Pope, Gilbert Pope, Booby Pope, Lee Petty, Michael Smith and Ray Martingale.
