CONSERVATIONIST Eby DIES AT AGE 89
Harry S. Eby, founder of Eby's Pines, conservationist and a former Elkhart County Council member, died Monday, Jan. 9, 1995 at Meridian Nursing Center East Lake in Elkhart. He was 89. Mr. Eby was a farmer and businessman, active in local government and soil conservation. He formerly lived at 14583 S.R. 120, Bristol. He started working on his father's farm along S.R. 120 near Bristol in 1926. In 1948 he planted the first trees that eventually became a 450-acre enterprise supplying Christmas trees and pines for landscaping. Asked about soil conservation in 1990, Eby recalled the Dust Bowl of 1936. "It was almost twilight every day. The winds were terrific and there was no rain." People should be aware that they can control erosion and help preserve the environment, he had said at the time. He became active in soil conservation during the Great Depression and interested in reforestation in the 1940's. He served as president of the in Association. of Soil and Water Conservation Districts and in the 1850's was appointed by Governor George Craig as chairman of the state conservation committee, serving four years. In addition to the tree plantings, he built a roller skating rink at Bristol in 1952, a restaurant in 1963 and later a campground. In the early 1970's at Eby's Pines he produced an outdoor historical musical drama about the Potawatomi Indians, written by John Gillies. In local government, he served eight years as Washington Twp. trustee and was elected to the county council in 1970 and reelected twice as a Democrat. In 1950 he served as the county's Democratic chairman. Many of his awards and achievements related to soil conservation and forestry. He was a member of Vistula Grange for 48 years. He was a member of the Elkhart County Soil and Water Conservation District for 37 years and established an ecology award presented annually. The Department of Natural Resources named him an outstanding tree farmer, and farmer of the year twice. In 1980 he won a national growers' award and took a Christmas tree to the White House. In 1991 he won the in Wildlife Agriculture Conservation Award. He was named an honorary lieutenant governor by Governor Robert Orr and received the Distinguished Hoosier Award.
Mr. Eby was Born Dec. 11, 1905 to Lewis S. and Irva (Stutsman) Eby in York Twp. On Dec 31, 1926, he married Inez M. Lee in Middlebury. She died Sept. 9, 1988. Surviving are three daughters, Doris Lang of Middlebury, Helen Alexander of Muncie and Carol Eby of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. A brother, Frank, also preceded him in death."
