Henry was the only son of Thomas McWhorter. He was a commissary sergeant, Co. E, 3rd WVa Voluntary Calvary. He was killed in Greenbrier River in Pocahontas County, Jan. 22, 1863. Early in the engagement he fell, mortally wounded. He is buried in the National Cemetery in Grafton, WVa. Two of his sons were non-commissioned officers in the same company and saw their father killed. One of them, (Walter)Fields, was captured and sent to Libby Prison. He was exchanged after three months and returned to his regiment and was promoted to commissary sergeant.
