Jacob J. Alford, an old citizen of New Albany, and in antebellum days engaged as a proprietor in steamboat building, died very suddenly this forenoon. He had been ill for several years, but seldom confined to his bed. When he arose this morning he complained to his daughter, Mrs. H. J. Needham, that he had passed a very restless night from neuralgic pains. He went to the back lot this forenoon, and remaining there an unusually long time a member of the family went out to see if anything had happened to him. He was discovered in a dying condition and did not survive until he could be carried to the house. Deceased served four years in the city Council as a member from the Sixth ward. For many years he was a member of the order of Odd Fellows. As a steamboat builder he worked upon many of the largest and finest steamers built at New Albany between 1840 and 1868. He leaves but one child, the wife of Dr. H. J. Needham. His age was 69 years and 4 months and he had been a resident of New Albany fifty-two years. He learned his trade with the late John J. Evans, but was born on the Isle of Wight, England. - New Albany Daily Ledger 09 Jul 1887
