PROMINENT BATAVIAN WHOSE FUNERAL TAKES PLACE THIS AFTERNOON

BATAVIA, Aug. 1 4 — ( S p e c i a l ).

The funeral of Major Henry Fiske Tarbox, whose death was reported in the News of Saturday, was held at 4 o'clock this afternoon at his late residence, 400 East Main street, in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends.

The Rev. Cyrus A. Johnson, pastor emeritus of the First Baptist church, conducted the services. The Rev. Stanley U. Mock of the First Presbyterian church , of which Mr. Tarbox had been a member for 47 years, is absent form the city.

Major Tarbox, who was 77 years old, spent his early years in Scottsville and Seneca Falls, but had been a prominent resident of Batavia for a half century. He was educated at Lima Seminary and when the Civil War broke out assisted in raising and organizing the 108th regiment of New York volunteers. He served with distinction in the war and rose to the rank of major of New York volunteers, being breveted by Governor Fenton. Besides being active in Upton Post, G. A. R. of Batavia, he was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Commandery of the State of New York.

After the war, Major Tarbox practiced the profession of law and was prominent in politics many years. He was a staunch Republican. In 1867 and 1868 he served Member of Assembly from Genesee county and during President Grant's administration was internal revenue collector for this district, and was postmaster at Batavia. He served tow or three years as a member of the Republican State committee and three or four years as chairman of the Genesee County Republican committee. In January 1883, he was elected vice-president and director of the Bank of Batavia, and served in both capacities until January 1911.

In 1880 Major Tarbox was a presidential elector on the Garfield ticket and in 1888 was a delegate to the national convention. In 1884 and 1888 he led the campaign in the county. the Upton Post, G. A. R., conducted the services at the grave and attended the funeral.

Batavia. Aug. 14.—The funeral of Major Henry F. Tarbox was held at 4 o'clock this afternoon from his late residence, No. 400 East Main street the Rev. S. U. Mock, pastor of the Presbyterian church, and the Rev. C. A. Johnson, pastor of the First Baptist church officiating.

Upton Post, G. A, R. and other patriotic societies, as well as the Genesee County Bar association members, attended the funeral in a body. The honorary bearers were: Lewis D. Collins. Holden T. Miller, former Assemblyman Frencis T. Miller of Byron, Robert B. Pease, Sidney A. Sherwin, Daniel W. Tomlinson, Frank S. Wood and Theron F. Woodward. The active bearers were: Herbert T. Booth, Newell K. Cone, Arthur G. Hough, Edward H. Leadley, Sidney A. Sherwin, Jr., and Donald W. Tomlinson. Jr. Services at the grave in the Batavia cemetery were conducted by the G. A. R.
