Luther was born in Illinois on August 9, 1865. His mother Margaret had been a school teacher but probably left that job shortly before Luther was born. His German-born father was a teacher and a photographer and a wounded Union veteran of the Civil War. They lived on a small farm in Eliza Township, Mercer County, Illinois. In 1874 the family moved to a farm between the Trinity River and the town of Paradise in Wise County, Texas, about 35 miles from Fort Worth. Three years later Luther became ill with meningitis. He died April 18, 1878, aged 12 years and 8 months.

Gravesite Details
His grave was next to his brother's, but neither were identified in the cemetery census. Evidently their markers are among the many that are no longer legible.
