Burkard, Joseph (child –March 22, 1894-April 12, 1910 –son of Anton Burkard and Elizabeth Heinzen –laborer –died from "accident struck by saw while sawing wood" –"Joseph Burkhart, a St. Nazianz boy, died in that village Tuesday from effects of injuries he received in an accident, his head being cut open by a saw. The boy was injured Monday and lingered in agony for twenty-four hours when death came to his relief. The unfortunate youth was 16 years of age. Youth Burkhart was a member of a wood sawing crew employed by his uncle Ignatz Burkhart of St. Nazianz, and was at work in the Burkhart woods a few miles from the village. A power machine was being used and in some unaccountable manner the saw became loosened and was released from the shaft to which it was attached. The machine was running at high speed and the saw was thrown from the shaft with such force and struck Burkhart in the head. The injury was a terrible one. The saw ploughing its way into the head, cutting a gash several inches long and deep, extending the full length of the scalp, and exposing the brain. Fellow workmen cared for the lad and removed him to the home of the uncle where he received every attention. But death resulted in a few hours from hemorrhage. The unfortunate boy never fully regained his senses. The accident as one of those unfortunate happenings which cannot be guarded against. No blame is attached to anyone it is said." – from the Calumet County Reporter, April 27, 1910) – –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 1, Row 20, Lot 18 –stone] [death record Manitowoc 10-137]
