Burkart, Frank Xavier (Dec. 14, 1860-Dec. 10, 1954 –husband of Anna Fritz [married April 26, 1887 at Holy Name Catholic Church, City of Sheboygan] –son of Peter Burkart and Caroline Schmieder –born at Laugernberg, Baden –immigrated to the US in 1865, spending a year in Milwaukee before moving to St. Nazianz in 1866 –in 1885, moved to Sheboygan –after his marriage in 1887, lived in Sheboygan until about 1893, then moved back to St. Nazianz –farmer and basket weaver –was also a mason and helped build the brick Salvatorian Seminary in the 1900’s –when moving to St. Nazianz, rented the house that once stood at 103 Birch Court, which was known as the Oschwald basket shop –Frank rented a part of this building until Oct. 17, 1907 when he purchased the 80 acre farm at 16833 Christel Road in Section 30, Town of Liberty –on Feb. 23, 1910 Frank purchased the adjacent western 60 acres of the W1/2 of the SE1/4 of Section 30 –this purchase gave Frank a farm of 140 acres –on June 12, 1925 sold this farm to his son-in-law Herbert Neumeyer and his wife Lydia Burkart –Frank continued to live on this farm as a basket maker until his death in 1954 –Anna lived here until her death on July 4, 1939 –“Although he had purchased the St. Nazianz farm in 1909, Mr. Burkart, suffering from rheumatism, was physically unable to operate the farm himself. As a result, he turned to basket weaving a number of years ago. Although many customers called at the farm home to purchase his hand-woven baskets of various sizes, the majority of his sales were made through the H. C. Prange store in Sheboygan.
