of complications and a heart attack. Burial will take place Monday morning at

CONVENT SISTERS JUBILEE EVENT
Mother Superior Alexia and Eight Others Observe Anniversary
TOOK VEIL 25 YEARS AGO
Five of Number Were Manitowoc Residents, Bishop Fox Here to Celebrate
Services for Day's Event

Mother Superior - Pauline Fullmer
Sister M. Helena - Rose Stephani
Sister M. Juliana - Alma Kalmes
Sister M. Augusta - Gertrude Neumann
Sister M. Cassiana - Jennie Ellinger

Eight sisters of the Franciscan Convent at Silver Lake including Mother
Superior Alexia and four others who are Manitowoc county women, will on
Thursday observe the silver jubilee anniversary of the day upon which
they consecrated their lives and future to the work and renounced the
world. The occasion will be a memorable one at which Bishop J.J. Fox of
the Green Bay Diocese with which the convent is affiliated will
officiate at the service to be held throughout the day. It is probable
that a large number of relatives and friends of the Sisters will attend
the celebration.

August 9, 1881 was the date on which the sisters were finally admitted
to the order of St. Francis and were given the veil after four years in
the novitiate. At that time, the local order comprised about sixty-five
members who had charge of twenty-five parochial schools and missions.
The order soon began to thrive however and at the present time there are
over 300 at the convent which has come to be recognized as one of the
most flourishing ones of its kind in the country. Some of the
instructors are sought by outside schools and the scope of their work is
not confined within the limits of the state. Affiliated with the convent
is the Good Samaritan Hospital at Zanesville, Ohio, the Home for the
Aged at West Point, Neb., and the Holy Family Hospital of this city.
Sisters from the Silver Lake institute supply the entire force of nurses
at these hospitals and to their credit may it be said that their
unselfish consecrated lives make them admirable fitted for the vocation
of caring for the sick.

Mother Alexia, the Superior, nee Paulena Fullmer, a sister of E. Fullmer
of Fullmer Bros., this city, was born in the Town of Cato, this county
and spent her girlhood days in the city with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Fullmer. In 188?, she joined the order as a novice and together
with the others of the Manitowoc contingent was admitted to the
sisterhood on August 9, 1881. The first ten years of her life as a
member of the order was devoted as a teacher in the parochial schools
and on August 7, 1891, exactly ten years lacking two days from the date
of her admission, she was honored with election as Superior of the
order. She has held the position ever since and during the regime the
convent has become the best known of the states similar institutions.
The present flourishing condition of the convent was due to
perserverance and fortitude for during the years of its existence much
of the early life was fraught with trials and many hardships. That five
of eight Sisters who observe the jubilee anniversary are natives of this
city, is a fact that is a credit to Manitowoc, a source of gratification
to friends. The city appreciates the devotion and work and the church,
in whose interests the labor is performed has long recognized the
Sister's worth. The presence of Bishop Fox on the occasion makes it
notable and of more than local interest and there is in it that which
brings to mind the beauty of the faith that sacrifice to the benefit and
upbuilding of mankind. It inspires to higher life and thought and cannot
but exercise a wholesome influence. The event will be ushered in at the
convent with a solemn high mass at which Rt. Rev. J.J. Fox will be the
celebrant assisted by a number of visiting clergymen and also local
priests of the parishes. There will be a reception in the afternoon and
it will be informal to meet and congratulate the sisters in whose honor
the jubilee is held.
