Also in St. Nazianz, elderly Joseph Endries died last week, one of the oldest settlers in that area. His funeral was Wed. last week.

Endries, Joseph P. (Jan. 1, 1829-Jan. 16, 1905 –husband of Anna Justin [married Feb. 5, 1856 at Maternity of Mary Catholic Church, Town of Manitowoc Rapids] –after the death of Anna in 1876, Joseph re-married Mary Kremer Elias [married March 4, 1881 at the Catholic Church in Charlestown, Town of Brothertown, Calumet County –this marriage ended in divorce in 1888 –Mary was the widow of Balthazar Elias and the daughter of John Kremer and Barbara –Mary and her first husband Balthzar Elias emigrated from Prussia to the US and Manitowoc County in 1855 –they operated a general store in Steinthal, Manitowoc County from the 1860’s to 1872 –they moved to Hayton in Town of Charlestown, Calumet County in 1872 and operated a saloon and boarding house –after Balthzar’s death in 1876, Mary continued to operate the saloon –she then re-married to Joseph Endries in 1881, with this marriage ending in divorce in 1888 –Mary died in Milwaukee County in 1905] –son of Joseph and Maria Catherine Endries –born Prussia –arrived in the US via New York in July of 1852 –applied for naturalization on Nov. 6, 1855 –first settled in the Town of Manitowoc Rapids –enlisted as a private in the Union Army on Sept. 30, 1864 in the Town of Liberty –mustered out on June 6, 1865 –private in Company G of the 11th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry –farmer in Town of Liberty –on Dec. 26, 1861 purchased, in partnership with Joseph Schunk, the 80 acres of the W1/2 of the NE1/4 of Section 31, Town of Liberty and had a farmstead created at 16516 Bartel Road –on Oct. 7, 1864 purchased Joseph Schunk’s half interest in this farm –on Feb. 9, 1889 sold this 80 acre farm to his son Phillip Endries –on Aug. 17, 1870 purchased the 40 acres around the Twin Lakes in Section 36, Town of Eaton from his brother John Endries –on Feb. 9, 1889, Joseph sold these 40 acres to his son John Endries, who then married Mary Gellings on May 22, 1889 –died from “valvular liaison of heart –chronic bronchitis”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 1, Row 1, Lot 21 –stone] [first marriage record Manitowoc 1-100] [second marriage record Calumet 2-56] [death record Manitowoc 7-298]
