Filz, Joseph (June 20, 1848-Feb. 6, 1920 –husband of Anna Marie Lanser [married in 1870] –son of Nicolaus Filz and Catharine Rohr [Nicolaus and Catherine were married Feb. 4, 1847 at Monsel, Rheinland] –born Monsel, Rheinland, Prussia –immigrated to the US in 1868 –merchant in Luxemburg, Kewaunee County –retired in 1894 –lived in Kewaunee County until moving to St. Nazianz in 1908 –was a member of the State Assembly when living in Kewaunee County –on Aug. 10, 1908 purchased the vacant lot at 204 East Birch Street in St. Nazianz and had a house built –both Joseph and Anna Marie lived in this house until Joseph’s death in 1920 –after Joseph’s death Anna moved back to Luxemburg, Kewaunee County where she died on Sept. 8, 1922 –upon their deaths, the house at 204 East Birch Street was inherited by their son Nicholas Filz –died from “cirrhosis of liver”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 3, Row 5, Lot 9 –stone] [marriage record in Kewaunee County] [death record Manitowoc 17-248]

Joseph Filz was called to his reward last Friday at 2 o’clock a.m., after a lingering illness with liver trouble.

The deceased was born in Europe in 1848 and came to America in 1868. He was married in 1870 and conducted a mercantile business in Luxemburg, Wis., for many years, retiring in 1894. For 11 years he had been a resident of St. Nazianz.

He is survived by his wife and two children, Nic. Filz, the banker of this village and Mrs. John Daul of Luxemburg; also 10 grandchildren and several sisters and brothers in Europe.

Mr. Filz formerly held several important offices, served his assembly district in the legislature and was also county treasurer of Kewaunee county. He was a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, the local branch attended the funeral, which was held Tuesday from St. Gregory’s church, in a body. A number of former neighbors from Luxemburg, and friends from Appleton, Port Washington, Holy Cross, Chicago and other outside points were in attendance at the last sad rites.
