Gaerthoefner, Michael G. (July 18, 1847-Oct. 1, 1920 –husband of Maria Schwab [married April 13, 1875 at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton] –son of Franz Joseph Gaerthoefner and Katherine Hilbert –born Bellenborn, Rheinpfalz, Bavaria –arrived with his parents in US via New York in Aug. of 1858 –carpenter and farmer –on July 24, 1876 purchased from the Roman Catholic Religious Association several vacant acres at 17930 Church Road in Section 25, Town of Eaton and had a house built –on Oct. 13, 1890 purchased an additional 10 acres from the Religious Association –on March 8, 1917 Michael transferred this house and land to his son Joseph –Michael lived here until his death in 1920 –died from “diabetes mellitus”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 3, Row 3, Lot 29 –stone] [marriage record Manitowoc 4-92] [death record Manitowoc 18-27]

This obituary can be found in the Tri-County Record, Kiel, Wisconsin. Issue Thursday, October 7, 1920 Page 4, Column 1
Michael Gaerthoeffner, a well-known resident of the county, passed away on the homestead farm of his son Joseph near here last Friday, after a lingering illness with diabetes. The deceased was a native of Germany, where he was born July 18, 1848; he came to this country with his parents, who settled in this section.

Mr. Gaerthoeffner was married about 45 years ago to Mary Schwab, who preceded him in death 3 1/2 years ago. He was a carpenter by trade but was a farmer for a number of years past.

He is survived by seven children, viz: Edward, George and Joseph of St. Nazianz and Theodore of Antigo, Mrs. Martin Lutz, Mrs. Jos. Lutz and Mrs. Frank Resch of Sheboygan; also one brother, Joseph of Sheboygan, 22 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

The funeral took place on Monday forenoon, from St. Gregory's church, with interment in the church cemetery. Rev. Deibele officiated.
