Gellings, Peter (July 17, 1861-Dec. 6, 1922 –single –son of Gerhard Gellings and Theodora Breuns –brother of Gertrude and Joseph Gellings –born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin –moved with his parents to St. Nazianz in 1868 –deaf and dumb [from 1880 census] –farmer in Town of Eaton –on Jan. 31, 1896, in partnership with his brother Joseph, purchased from his parents the 120 acre farm at 8526 Greendale Road in Section 26, Town of Eaton –included with these 120 acres were 40 acres of swampland in the SW1/4 of the NE1/4 of Section 8, Town of Eaton –when his brother Joseph died on June 1, 1898, Peter became the sole owner of this farm –in the 1900 census for the Town of Eaton, Peter is shown living on this farm with his sister Gertrude plus Alois and John Gellings, who were sons of Peter’s deceased brother Joseph –on June 4, 1917, Peter sold the 80 acre farm 8526 Greendale Road to his nephew Alois Gellings with the stipulation that Peter could live in the farmhouse for the remainder of his life –on Dec. 1, 1921 Peter sold the 40 acres of swampland in Section 8, Town of Eaton to his nephew Peter Koenig –on May 21, 1920, Peter purchased the former Fred Lulloff house at 201 West Court in St. Nazianz –lived in this house until his death in 1922 –died from “chronic myocarditis –acute bronchitis”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 1, Row 14, Lot 19 –family stone] [death record Manitowoc 19-559]

ST. NAZIANZ – Peter Gelling, a well-known and highly respected citizen of this village, passed away suddenly on Wednesday of last week, death being due to apoplexy of the brain, which he suffered at the home of his sister, Gertrude, where he was living.

Deceased was born July 17, 1861, in Milwaukee and reached the age of 60 years and several months. He came to St. Nazianz in 1873 at the age of seven years with his parents, and later made his home on a farm two miles west of the village. Two years ago he disposed of the farm to his nephew Alois Gellings and since then lived with his sister, Gertrude in the village. Mr. Gellings was unmarried.

Three brothers have preceded him in death. He is survived by three sisters as follows; Gertrude Gellings, Mrs. Jos. Koenig, and Mrs. John Endries.

The funeral services took place at St. Gregory’s church on Saturday forenoon at 9:30, Rev. Deibele officiating. Interment in the church cemetery.
