Farmer Killed When Tractor Tips in County
Alexander Gerhard Is Accident Victim Near St. Nazianz
ST. NAZIANZ — Alexander L. Gerhard, 69, was killed almost instantly Wednesday afternoon when his tractor overturned while he was plowing a field on his farm southwest of here.
Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen said Gerhard apparently was trying to turn the tractor around at the end of a furrow when it climbed a stone pile and tipped over backwards. He was pinned under the steering wheel and died of crushing chest injuries.
Dr. Teitgen set the time of the accident at about 4 p.m. but the body was not discovered until 5:30 p.m. by a newphew who had been sent out to look for Gerhard. Mrs. Gerhard notified Herman Riesterer after she became alarmed because her husband had not come home for supper.
Funeral SaturdayDr. Teitgen theorized that Gerhard's foot slipped off the clutch pedal as he was turning the tractor with the result that it went out of control and hit the stone pile.
Gerhardt had been plowing for several days in a field a short distance from the house, located on Rt. 1, Kiel, a mile southwest of this village.
Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m., Saturday at the Kallenbenz Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, the Rev.Terence Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
Mr. Gerhardt was born Sept. 11, 1887, on the homestead farm in the Town of Eaton, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gerhardt. He married the former Clara Anhalt of Milhome Oct. 15, 1912 and they settled on the home farm where they lived since. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Holy Name Society, and was a trustee of St. Gregory Church for 13 years.
