Ruth Emlet died Jan. 19, 2008. She was born Oct. 25, 1914 in Bolivar, Mo. to Mittie Creed Shedd and Raymond Shedd.
Her mother died when she was young, and an aunt cared her for until her father married Letitia Martin, a widow, with two small children of her own -- a son Thomas Martin and a daughter Ramona Martin.
The family moved to Arizona when she was three. They lived in various places in the Valley, settling in Payson during the Depression. Ray helped build the Old Rock School house and the family lived out at the Flowing Springs Ranch.
In 1938 Ruth married Guy R. Emlet in Winslow. Mr. Emlet was from Flagstaff where they took up residence. During the war Mr. Emlet served in the Medical Corps of the Army. Mrs. Emlet worked at Beaumont Ordinance Depot in Flagstaff boxing ammunition for the troops.
After the war, Mr. Emlet worked for the U.S. Forest Service. He and Ruth manned the Baker Butte Fire Lookout Station, in addition to other Forest Service appointments in Arizona. Later, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Phoenix as a letter carrier. Mrs. Emlet worked for a gas company.
In the 60s, they moved back to Payson where Mrs. Emlet resided until August 2007, when she moved to Sedona to be near her cousin Shirley Bradley.
She was a lifetime member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She was also a member of the Ponderosa Chapter 64 of Eastern Star. She was appointed Grand Martha in 1984 by the Arizona Chapter and in 1986 as the Grand Representative to Arkansas. She also served in other offices and worked in many projects to build the Masonic Lodge in Payson.
Mrs. Emlet is survived by her cousin Shirley (Gene) Bradley and family of Cottonwood; cousin Allen (Claire) Aldrich of Glendale; her niece Mary Lou (Greg) Panatopoulos and family of Twin Falls, Idaho; nephews Cliff (Wanda) McPherson and Tom (Cathy) McPherson of Arkansas and great niece and nephews in Arizona, Arkansas and Idaho.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepbrother, Thomas Martin, stepsister Ramona McPherson and half sister, Barbara Haley Murphy and her ex-husband, Guy R. Emlet, to whom she was married for 49 years.
Her family will remember Mrs. Emlet as an avid outdoorswoman, nature lover, good housekeeper, good cook, hunter and gardener. She also made many beautiful crochet pieces. She was an environmentalist before it became popular to be "green."
