VIRGIL HEITZMANN

From Der Nord Westen, 20 Feb. 1908: (From the correspondent in St. Nazianz, 18 Feb.)
Death on the 14th of old settler and veteran Virgel (sic) Heizmann at age 78.
For years Mr. and Mrs. Heizmann, a childless couple, have closed themselves off from the community and were seldom seen. Mrs. Heizmann died about a year ago.

Heitzmann, Virgil (at times shown as “Alois Virgil”) –Oschwald Brother (Jan. 31, 1828-Feb. 13, 1908 –husband of Genovefa Guenter –parents marked as “unknown” on death record –born Baden –immigrated to the US on the boat Zurich departing from the Port of Havre, France, arriving in the Port of New York on July 23, 1855 –served in the Union Army during the Civil War –private in Company A, 31st Regiment, State of Massachusetts –enlisted as a private on May 12, 1864 and mustered out on May 12, 1865 –workman –for the brief period of July 29, 1865 to Dec. 18, 1867 owned the 40 acres of the NE1/4 of the NW1/4 of Section 23, Town of Eaton –from April 10, 1869 to Nov. 3, 1880 owned the lot with house at 105 Birch Court in St. Nazianz –on Jan. 19, 1875 purchased from the Roman Catholic Religious Association the lot that likely held a communal house at 219 Church Street in St. Nazianz –lived here until selling on Aug. 26, 1902 –in the 1880 and 1905 census for the Town of Eaton, Virgil and Genovefa are shown living alone in this house –“a childless couple, have closed themselves off from the community and were seldom seen” –from death write-up in Der Nord Westen –they did have a daughter Mary (1869-1871) –died from “cancer of stomach –tricuspid regurgitation”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 2, Row 9, Lot 11 –stone] [death record Manitowoc 9-351]
