He was appointed Secretary of State by President Hoover and served from 1929 to 1933. In 1940, he began his second tenure as Secretary of War and is best known for his aggressive stance during World War II. He managed the drafting and training of 12 million sailors, soldiers and airmen, also the purchase and transportation to battlefields of 30% of the nation's industrial output. Stimson was the major decision-maker on the atomic bomb and both Presidents Roosevelt and Truman followed his advice about using it as the weapon that led to the ultimate end of the war. He was a resident of West Hills, New York. In 1948 he donated $1,000 to The Melville Volunteer Fire Company so they could purchase their first ambulance. The fire company voted to make him an Honorary Member. The fire company's rescue team was named The Col. Henry L. Stimson Rescue Squad.
