Civil War veteran - Co. D 117th. New York Infantry - 1862-1863.
Served with his brothers Andrew T. and Henry S. who also served in Co. D.
They both have memorials at Waterville cemetery.
WATERVILLE, Aug. 8---The death of James P Rowell, an aged and esteemed resident of this village, occurred at his home on Tower Avenue Tuesday night, at the advanced age of 80 years. Mr Rowell was born in this vicinity and his long life has been spent here. For many years he was the owner and carried on a farm near here, but about twenty-five years ago gave it up and moved into the home where he died.
He was a veteran of the Civil War and was always much interested in all that pertained to that struggle, and for years has been an esteemed member of Rowell Post, G.A.R, which derived its name from his family. Mr Rowell's wife died several years ago. He is survived by his son, Arthur Rowell, and by two daughters, Mrs Benton of New Bedford and Miss Agnes Rowell, a teacher in the Binghampton High School, and also by two brothers here.
