Mallman, Joseph (April 1, 1866-Aug. 22, 1949 –husband of Margaret Koenig [married Jan. 27, 1891 at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton] –son of Andrew Mallman and Anna Hoffman –born at St. Wendel, Town of Centerville –farmer, cheese maker, tavern keeper –“The couple, Joseph and Margaret, operated a tavern in St. Nazianz until 1918, when the tavern burned in a fire which destroyed a large section of the village. Then they moved to Pigeon Lake, where they have operated a dance hall and resort since.” –on July 10, 1893 purchased the house at 110 South Fourth Avenue in St. Nazianz –this was likely their first house after their marriage in 1891 –lived here until selling on Feb. 21, 1900 –in the 1900 census for the Town of Liberty, Joseph and Margaret are shown living at the Wisconsin House on the NE corner of the intersection of County A and C in St. Nazianz –living with them were their children Elizabeth [born in 1892], Adela [born in 1894], and Philomena [born in 1898] –also living here were Joseph’s mother Anna and Joseph’s brothers Nicholas [born in 1875] and Peter [born in 1879] –Joseph is shown as a “hotel keeper” –in the 1905 census for the Town of Liberty, Joseph and Margaret are shown renting and living at the Wisconsin House –the Wisconsin House was owned by Joseph’s widowed mother –in the census of 1905 Joseph is listed as a saloon keeper –on Sept. 9, 1909 Joseph purchased the Wisconsin House Inn from his widowed mother –Joseph ran this establishment until it was destroyed in the fire of April 18, 1918 –Joseph and Margaret then left these ruins in abandonment –on Nov. 17, 1930 they sold this vacant lot with the ruins still standing –after this fire Joseph and Margaret moved to Pigeon Lake in the Town of Liberty and opened another saloon –from May 8, 1931 until his death in 1949, Joseph owned a cheese factory at 14416 Newton Road in Section 28, Town of Liberty –died from “old age –cerebral hemorrhage –heart failure –myocardial dysfunction”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 2, Row 16, Lot 13 –stone] [marriage record Manitowoc 6-82] [death record Manitowoc 42-559]

JOSEPH MALLMANN

Funeral services for Joseph Mallmann, 83, who died Monday morning at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kirsch of Howards Grove, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Gregory's church in St. Nazianz. Burial will be in the church cemetery with the Rev. Frederick Dorn officiating.

Mr. Mallmann formerly owned the Pigeon Lake resort and had moved to Howards Grove about three months ago. He was born in 1866, and in 1891, married Margaret Koenig. She died in 1940.

Survivors are five daughters, Mrs. Lillian Skatrud of Manitowoc, Mrs. Harry Silbernagel of Sheboygan, Mrs. Harry Kirsch of Howards Grove, Mrs. Guderla Robinson of Chicago, Mrs. Alton Owen of Chicago; two sons,
Frank and Wilbert of Evanston, Ill.; sister, Mrs. Katie Balk of Glen Ellen, Ill.; 17 grand children and four great grand children. Three children preceded him in death.

He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. The body may be viewed at the Kellenbenz funeral home in St. Nazianz.
