McMunn, John S. (June 3, 1851-April 24, 1933 –husband of Gertrude Hoey [married Nov. 3, 1875 at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton] –son of John McMunn and Phoebe Osman –born in Orange County, New York –moved with his parents to the Town of Eaton in 1854 –in the 1880 census for the Town of Eaton, John and his wife Gertrude are shown living in a house near the farmstead of John’s in-laws Patrick and Katherine Hoey at 21528 Carstens Lake Road in Section 16, Town of Eaton –on Dec. 6, 1893 purchase the 40 acre farm at 21528 Carstens Lake Road in Section 16, Town of Eaton from his widowed mother-in-law Katherine Hoey –in the 1900 census for the Town of Eaton, John and Gertrude are shown as living on this farm with their children Edward [born in Feb. of 1881], Katherine [born in October of 1882], Bertha [born in April of 1889], Richard [born in Sept. of 1891], Steward [born in Jan. of 1895], and the twins Lilly and Lucy [born in April of 1897] –on Nov. 9, 1917 purchased the 40 acres of the SE1/4 of the NE1/4 of Section 16, Town of Eaton from the Herman Bloy farm centered at 21435 Carstens Lake Road in Section 16 –this purchased increased the McMunn farm to 80 acres –on Oct. 15, 1929 John sold this 80 acre farm centered at 21528 Carsten Lake Road to Erwin Holdorf –from Dec. 2, 1902 to until his death in 1933 owned 17.5 acres of cedar swamp in the E1/2 of the NE1/4 of Section 29, Town of Eaton –from Dec. 7, 1909 until his death in 1933 owned the 20 acres of swampland in the S1/2 of the NW1/4 of the NE1/4 of Section 18, Town of Eaton –died from “cardio renal insufficiency, Jan. 1, 1932 –uremia, April 23, 1933”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 3, Row 2, Lot 19 –stone] [marriage record Manitowoc 4-106] [death record Manitowoc 27-744]

JOHN MCMUNN

Aged Resident of Manitowoc County is Summoned Monday
St. Nazianz – John McMunn, 82, well known resident of Manitowoc County, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ben Fiddler in the Town of Eaton at 8:30 o'clock Monday evening after a lingering illness.

Mr. McMunn was born in the state of New York in 1851 and at the age of three years came to Wisconsin with his parents. They settled on a farm three miles west of St. Nazianz where he resided until 1930 when he retired and lived with his daughter. He was married to Miss Gertrude Hoey at St. Nazianz in 1876. His wife preceded him in death on January 10, 1929.

Thirteen children were born to the couple, six of whom have died. The seven sons and daughters are: Mrs. Mary Rickaby, Lincoln County, Mrs. Ben Fiddler, Ed McMunn, Town of Eaton, Mrs. Catherine Rickaby, New London, Richard, Hayton, Leonard, Chilton, Lucy, Chippewa Falls. He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. McMunn celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1925.For nine successive years, Mr. McMunn held the office of town assessor of the Town of Eaton. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and members will attend the funeral in a body.
Funeral services will be held at St. Nazianz at 10 o'clock Thursday morning at St. Gregory Church. Rev. Fintan S.D.S., will officiate and interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.
